National Curriculum Guidelines
The National Curriculum Statement (NCS) Grades R–12 provides the framework that guides teaching and learning in South African schools. It outlines the knowledge, skills and values learners should develop from Grade R through Grade 12, ensuring that education prepares young people for further study, the workplace and responsible citizenship.
At its core, the curriculum aims to equip learners with practical knowledge and critical thinking skills that can be applied in real-life contexts. It also promotes equality in education by ensuring that all learners—regardless of background—have access to a consistent and structured learning pathway across the country.
The National Curriculum also includes detailed Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) for each subject, giving teachers clear guidance on what to teach and how learning should be assessed. This helps schools maintain consistent standards while supporting meaningful learning outcomes for every learner.
Whether you are an educator, parent or learner, understanding these guidelines can help you better navigate the South African education system and support academic success at every stage of schooling.
