DRIVING DEVELOPMENT IN THE NORTH WEST REGION

OUR COMMUNITY BENEFICIARY AREAS

Rustenburg is the Benefit Area of RCDT. Rustenburg is situated at the foot of the Magaliesburg mountain range in the North West province. Rustenburg Local Municipality is the governing municipality of the area. It is one of five municipalities within the Bojanala District Municipality in the North West province and is divided into 42 wards. Rustenburg, as a benefit area, is the homeland of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, a Setswana-speaking Traditional community which has twenty-nine Villages.

The benefit areas around Rustenburg are determined within a 15km radius of Anglo mining operations. To date, there are about sixty-five RCDT benefit areas around Rustenburg. From its inception and throughout its operations, RCDT engaged with the Royal Bafokeng Nation and the Rustenburg Local Municipality. RCDT has also interacted with community leaders, NGOs and community members at large through various interventions during RCDT operations.

BENEFIT AREA CATEGORIES

Benefit areas are made up of traditional, municipal and/or privately-owned areas. Each type of land has unique governance structures and ways in which communities engage in development projects.

TRADITIONAL LAND

These are village areas governed by a Kgosana (traditional leader) and the kgotla (community council). Development in traditional areas often involves close consultation with the local leadership, ensuring projects align with cultural practices, social norms and community priorities. This approach ensures that sustainable initiatives reflect the values and needs of the community.

PRIVATE LAND

Privately-owned areas are typically managed by a community-elected chairperson, serving a five-year term. Engagement here is guided by the property owner or management structures, with a strong emphasis on collaboration between landowners and residents. Projects in these areas often focus on enhancing local livelihoods, infrastructure and social amenities while respecting private property rights.

MUNICIPAL LAND

Municipal land falls under the jurisdiction of an elected Ward Councillor, also serving a five-year term. Development in municipal areas is aligned with local government planning, policies and service delivery objectives. Collaboration with municipal authorities ensures that initiatives complement broader municipal development strategies, from infrastructure upgrades to community programmes.
