AGRICULTURE OVERVIEW

The Rustenburg Community Development Trust (RCDT) supports agriculture as a strategic driver of sustainable livelihoods and community resilience. Through the promotion of community-led farming initiatives, responsible land use and agro-processing activities, RCDT seeks to strengthen local food production and income generation. These interventions create opportunities for skills transfer, job creation and economic participation, particularly in rural and mining-host communities. RCDT believes agriculture plays a critical role in building self-sufficiency and long-term economic stability.

AGRICULTURE PROGRAMMES OVER THE YEARS

TSOGANG BOGADI BA KANANA – AGRICULTURAL EMPOWERMENT (KANANA)

Impact: This initiative promotes food security and sustainable community farming through the strategic provision of agricultural tools and equipment to local growers in Kanana.

With RCDT’s support, farmers are able to effectively maintain communal gardens, improve crop productivity and establish small-scale agricultural activities that generate household income.

The project goes beyond subsistence farming by encouraging structured cultivation, responsible land use and skills development within the community. It strengthens local food systems while building confidence, self-reliance and economic participation among beneficiaries. In short: it turns soil into opportunity and struggle into sustainability.

MMAKOKETSI AGED CLUB – AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT (TLASENG)

Impact: This project focuses on strengthening local food production through the empowerment of elderly-led farming groups in Tlaseng. RCDT has provided fertilisers, seedlings and protective gear to enable consistent and safe participation in community gardening activities.

The initiative not only improves access to fresh produce but also promotes active ageing, purpose and continued contribution among senior citizens. By encouraging youth involvement in supporting these gardens, the project fosters intergenerational knowledge transfer and community cohesion.

It’s agriculture with heart – where experience fuels growth and dignity is harvested alongside the crops.
